Developing Night Nurse Palliative Care Competency
Mary Ferns is the Night Nursing Manager h Night Nursing Service for the Irish Cancer Society, which provides support and care for patients at end of life and their families in their home. This non-specialist nursing team attends both cancer and non-malignant patients. Mary was awarded a fellowship of €2,000 towards a visit to Sobell House, Oxford, England, which is a World Health Organisation (WHO) Centre of Excellence in Palliative Care.
Following on from here visit, Mary produced a report which outlined the learning from the visit, which included expanding her knowledge around supporting the educational and professional development needs of non-specialist nurses working in palliative care in the community setting. As a result of her visit, Mary is currently reviewing the learning pathways for night nurses. She is also planning to advocate for DNACPR documentation in patients own home and for nurses to be able to verify and confirm an expected death. Mary has also delivered a number of oral presentations.
